Welcome to Highgate
Some of the world’s greatest writers, politicians and thinkers made their home in this north London suburb, which offers majestic views over the capital. Today Highgate remains as desirable as ever, thanks to its proximity to central London and its traditional village atmosphere.

Transport
Though its rural feel may be more akin to places outside London, Highgate is very much part of the capital and when it comes to commuting, very close to the heart of it.

Highgate tube station is just a short walk from the development and from there trains run to central London, the City and south London (Northern Line). Journey times to Leicester Square are around 25 minutes, to King’s Cross around 20 minutes and to Bank around 30 minutes.

Cycling to Old Street takes approximately 25 minutes and to Bank, Covent Garden and Charing Cross around 30 minutes. Local bus services run along the Archway Road, which is also the A1 for travel to the M1, the M25 and beyond.

Shopping
Highgate is a popular destination for shoppers, with a wealth of boutiques, food retailers and independent stores along its high street supplying a range of goods and services.

Crouch End to the east, Hampstead to the west and Camden to the south all have popular retail districts, while Brent Cross Shopping Centre is a 10-minute car journey away. In addition, the department stores and designer showrooms of Oxford Street, Regent Street, Bond Street and Marble Arch are less than half an hour away by tube.

Eating and drinking
Highgate High Street is the hub of the village, home to an excellent selection of cafés and restaurants, from popular chain brands to small independents, such as High Tea of Highgate, which serves homemade cakes and hand mixed teas. Traditional pubs are plentiful: The Angel Inn on the high street sells a variety of snacks and more substantial dishes, or head for The Bull on North Hill, which also offers a varied menu and in addition, brews its own beer on site.

The Spaniards Inn on Hampstead Heath dates from the 16th century and is said to be one of the oldest pubs in London. Its past clientele includes the poets Keats and Byron, it is mentioned in Dickens’ The Pickwick Papers and one previous landlord is thought to be the father of highwayman Dick Turpin.

North Road is the setting for The Wrestlers, another pub with a long history going back to 1547, while The Flask on Highgate West Hill is claimed to have several resident ghosts. Both pubs serve a selection of traditional dishes and real ales

Leisure
The abundance of green space in and around Highgate lends itself to outdoor activities such as walking and cycling. Waterlow Park, off Highgate Hill has tennis courts and a children’s play area, while Highgate Wood, just a five-minute walk from the development, features a sports ground within it, as well as guided trails and a children’s playground.

Hampstead Heath covers 790 acres and encompasses hills, grassland, ponds, woodland, outdoor swimming pools and play areas. A nature conservation site, the heath is home to a great variety of animals and plants, and attracts thousands of visitors. Parliament Hill, which affords spectacular views over London, and Parliament Hill Fields are located towards the south of the heath, while Kenwood House, a 17th century stately home and grounds, is situated towards the north. Managed by English Heritage, the house, with its impressive art collection and its gardens, often a venue for summer concerts, are open to the public throughout the year.

Live music also finds a voice in Highgate at The Red Hedgehog, opposite Highgate Tube, which stages regular classical music concerts, and at Lauderdale House in Waterlow Park. Drama, family entertainment, circus and dance workshops take place at Jacksons Lane, a converted church incorporating a 160-seat theatre, off Archway Road, while fringe theatre has a home with Upstairs at the Gatehouse, a popular venue above The Gatehouse pub in Highgate Village.

Education
Families will find a selection of highly regarded schools close to Highgate Court, both state and private. These include St Michael’s CE Primary School and Highgate Primary School for younger children, and Highgate Wood School for secondary students.

Highgate School, which has pre-prep, junior and senior sections, and Channing School, which caters for girls aged four to 18 years old, are just two examples of high-performing independent schools in the area.

Local authority
Highgate lies within the boundaries of three London boroughs: Haringey, Camden and Islington. Highgate Court is within the borough of Haringey.
